Increase Productivity with a Good Morning Routine

Do you have a morning routine? And by morning routine I don’t just mean hitting snooze 8 times and then rolling out of bed moving at blazing speeds because you’re running late. :)

Do you really have a morning routine? A routine that helps prepare you to tackle the day? If not, I encourage you to keep reading. And for you late risers I promise it won’t hurt a bit. A good morning routine can be for anyone and everyone!

In a perfect world on a perfect morning, my morning routine looks something like this:

My Morning Routine

Wake up early. This probably sounds terrible if you’re a night owl but please hear me out. I have found that my most productive time of the day is early in the morning – from about 7am – noon. Once I eat lunch I can tell my productivity just goes downhill and it keeps going in that direction for the rest of the night. For this reason I find that the earlier I wake up, the more productive I am. Even just waking up 30 minutes earlier makes a huge difference for me.

Spend time alone. I don’t know about you but I need alone time in the morning. I get stressed out if I don’t take a few minutes to myself before I’m greeted by everybody else. I typically spend this time praying. Sometimes I’ll journal and/or read my daily devotion during this time too.

Workout. In a perfect world, I’d workout in the morning. However, I don’t wake up early enough for that, haha! I could but then I worry I’ll wake up the kids and I don’t wanna do that. I typically workout after work – so late afternoon. It’s not my favorite time to workout but I make it work. Most days.

Go over to-do list. I try to make it a habit to make a daily to-do list at night for the following day. I have learned that I’m a lot more productive and less stressed when I have a to-do list to follow. This reminds me of the most important things I need to do and it helps keep me focused. I love being able to cross each task off as I complete them!

Get ready for the day. Shower, get dressed, etc.

Make the most of your commute (if you have one). My drive to work is 35-40 minutes one way. Sometimes I’ll listen to music but often times I’ll listen to a great podcast. I’ve learned quickly that listening to podcasts relaxes me as I drive and I don’t drive as fast. When you have two speed warnings in the last 8 months, that’s a good thing! My favorite podcasts right now are Joyce Meyer, Missing Maura Murray, The Dave Ramsey Show and Serial. I use the Podbean app and connect my phone via Bluetooth so it plays through my Jeep’s radio. Love it!

Later Morning

Eat breakfast. Most people would probably include this earlier in their morning routine but I am not a fan of eating breakfast as soon as I wake up. I can hardly drink water at that time either – it makes my stomach feel gross. I’ve tried to do that healthy thing where they say to drink cold lemon water after waking but yeah, I can’t. I need to be awake for an hour or two before I have any kind of appetite. Sometimes I will sip on juice though, that doesn’t seem to bother me.

A good morning routine doesn’t have to be complicated and it doesn’t have to take a long time either. Just think of a few things that might help you get your day started on the right track. A good nighttime routine can make your morning routine easier too, more on that later. :)

If you’d like more ideas you have to check out this blog. It’s completely dedicated to morning routines and it’s searchable by the type of lifestyle you have! You can even subscribe to their newsletter to get a new morning routine delivered to you every Wednesday. That’s good stuff.
